* Arrow pointing up: Overdrive is engaged (generally better for highway fuel economy).
* Arrow pointing down or flashing: Overdrive is disengaged (often used for better engine braking on hills or for towing). A flashing arrow might also indicate a problem with the overdrive system.
If the arrow is flashing, it's a warning that you should have your Jeep checked by a mechanic. It might indicate a malfunctioning overdrive system, transmission fluid issue, or another problem. Simply driving with overdrive disengaged is not a long-term solution.
