The problem could be anything from a loose gas cap to a more serious engine issue. You must get the code read from the OBD-II system. This can be done inexpensively at many auto parts stores (like AutoZone, Advance Auto Parts, etc.). They'll plug a scanner in and tell you the trouble code(s). This code will give a much better indication of what's wrong.
Don't ignore the check engine light. Driving with a problem could cause further damage to your vehicle.
