What does engine ping mean?

Engine ping, also known as detonation or knocking, is an abnormal combustion event in a spark-ignition internal combustion engine. Instead of the smooth, controlled burn of the air-fuel mixture, a portion of the mixture ignites prematurely, causing a sharp, metallic pinging or knocking sound. This uncontrolled explosion puts extra stress on engine components and can cause damage if it persists.
