1. Park on a level surface: Make sure your Windstar is parked on level ground and the engine is off. Let the engine sit for at least 5-10 minutes after driving to allow the oil to settle back into the oil pan.
2. Locate the dipstick: Open the hood. The dipstick is usually yellow or bright colored and has a handle with markings. It's often near the front of the engine. It might say "OIL" or have an oil can symbol on it. If you're unsure, consult your owner's manual for the exact location.
3. Remove and wipe the dipstick: Pull the dipstick straight out. Wipe it clean with a lint-free cloth or paper towel.
4. Reinsert and check: Push the dipstick all the way back into its tube and remove it again.
5. Read the level: The dipstick will have markings indicating "ADD," "LOW," "FULL," or similar. The oil level should be between the "ADD" and "FULL" marks. If it's below the "ADD" mark, you need to add oil.
Important Note: Adding too much oil is just as bad as having too little. If the level is already at or near the "FULL" mark, do *not* add any oil.
What type of oil? Always consult your owner's manual to find the correct type and weight of oil for your 2000 Ford Windstar. Using the incorrect oil can damage your engine.
If you're still having trouble locating the dipstick or interpreting the level, it's best to consult your owner's manual or take your Windstar to a mechanic.
