The thermostat on a 2002 Chevrolet Monte Carlo with a 3400 V6 engine is located on the engine block, at the lower end of the engine, behind the water pump. You'll likely need to remove some components (possibly the fan shroud and possibly some hoses) to access it. It's not readily visible without some disassembly.
