If your engine stalls in traffic what should you do?

If your engine stalls in traffic, here's what you should do:

1. Safety First!

* Turn on your hazard lights immediately. This alerts other drivers to your stopped vehicle.

* Assess your surroundings. Look in your mirrors and check for approaching traffic. Is there enough space around you to safely remain stopped, or do you need to move slightly?

* Stay calm. Panic won't help. Think clearly and methodically.

2. Addressing the Stall

* Shift to neutral (if automatic) or push in the clutch (if manual). This prevents the car from rolling backward or forward unintentionally. If you are on a hill, engage your parking brake immediately.

* Try to restart the engine. If it starts easily, great! Proceed cautiously, checking your gauges to see if anything seems amiss.

* If it doesn't restart:

* Check your fuel gauge. Are you out of gas?

* Is the car in Park (automatic) or neutral (manual)? Make sure the gear selector is in the correct position.

3. If You Can't Restart

* Attempt to safely move your vehicle out of the flow of traffic, if possible. Do this only if it's safe and you can do so without endangering yourself or others. Pulling completely off the road is ideal.

* Call for help. This might mean calling roadside assistance (if you have it), a friend, family member, or a tow truck.

* If you are in a dangerous location (e.g., on a busy highway, in heavy traffic, in bad weather): Remain in your vehicle with your seatbelt fastened. Call for help and wait for assistance to arrive. Stay visible by turning on your interior lights if it's dark.

4. After Restarting (If Successful)

* Monitor your vehicle carefully. Look out for unusual sounds, smells, or performance issues.

* Consider having your vehicle checked by a mechanic. A sudden stall can be an indicator of a more serious problem.

Important Note: Never attempt to repair the engine yourself in the middle of traffic. Safety is your top priority.
