What is the difference between a 350 and lt1 engine?

The 350 and LT1 are both small-block Chevrolet V8 engines, but they represent different generations and have significant differences:

350 Small Block (Various iterations):

* Generation: A broad term encompassing many variations of the small-block Chevrolet V8 engine with a 350 cubic inch (5.7L) displacement. It was produced for many years with numerous design changes over time. There's no single "350" specification. You'll find different versions with varying horsepower, compression ratios, carburetion, fuel injection, etc., depending on the year and application (truck, car, etc.).

* Design: Generally characterized by a pushrod valvetrain (valves are operated directly by pushrods actuated by rocker arms and the camshaft), a cast iron block, and a relatively simple design.

* Technology: Early versions were carbureted. Later versions included fuel injection systems, but generally these were not as sophisticated as those found in the LT1.

LT1 Small Block (Specific Generation):

* Generation: The LT1 is a specific generation of the small-block V8 engine introduced by Chevrolet in 1992. It was a significant departure from earlier 350s.

* Design: Features a reverse-flow cooling system (coolant flows opposite to the direction of the intake manifold), a much lighter aluminum block and heads, and a more advanced fuel injection system. The heads typically used a multi-port fuel injection.

* Technology: The LT1 was a significant jump in technology compared to most earlier 350s. It employed a sophisticated computer-controlled fuel injection system, sequential fuel injection, and an advanced ignition system. It used roller camshafts which were more efficient and allowed for higher RPM and power than the earlier flat tappet style of cams used widely in the older 350's

* Power & Efficiency: Generally, the LT1 produced more horsepower and torque for its displacement than comparable older 350s while typically having better fuel economy.

In short: Saying "350" is very general. An LT1 *is* a 350 cubic inch engine (approximately), but it's a far more modern and technologically advanced version compared to most other engines commonly referred to simply as a "350." The LT1 represents a significant step up in performance and efficiency due to its aluminum construction and advanced fuel injection and ignition systems. Comparing a specific year and model's "350" to the LT1 would be needed for a precise comparison.
