What is the exhaust valve cooled by?

Exhaust valves are primarily cooled by the flow of relatively cool air/fuel mixture that enters the cylinder during the intake stroke. A secondary cooling effect comes from the surrounding cylinder head material which conducts heat away. In some high-performance engines, additional cooling methods like sodium-filled valve stems might be employed to help transfer heat away from the valve head more efficiently.
