How do you set the timing on a 1970 Chevy 350?

1. Locate the timing mark on the crankshaft pulley. It is a small notch or line, and it is usually located near the top of the pulley.

2. Rotate the engine until the timing mark is aligned with the pointer on the timing cover.

3. If you're using points, loosen the distributor hold-down bolt and turn the distributor until the points open.

4. If you're using a HEI distributor, loosen the distributor hold-down bolt and, with points closed, turn the distributor slightly counterclockwise until the spark advances about a sixteenth of an inch then tighten it back down

5. Tighten the distributor hold-down bolt

6. Start the engine and check the timing with a timing light. The timing light should flash when the timing mark is aligned with the pointer on the timing cover.

7. If the timing is off, loosen the distributor hold-down bolt and turn the distributor until the timing mark is aligned with the pointer on the timing cover when the timing light flashes.

8. Tighten the distributor hold-down bolt and recheck the timing.
