What does the slang term turkey feathers mean when referring to a jet engine?

Turkey feathers is slang for exhaust stains on a jet engine's exhaust cone or inside of the engine's nozzle/exhaust section/jet pipe.

These stains are usually caused by the deposition of unburnt carbon particles from the fuel, which can occur when the engine is running rich (higher amounts of fuel) or when there is a problem with the fuel injection system or combustor causing poor fuel atomisation.
