Tools and Materials Needed
- Replacement fuel pump
- Fuel pump removal tool
- Flat-head screwdriver
- Phillips-head screwdriver
- Socket wrench set
- Rags
- Safety goggles
- Gloves
Procedure
Step 1: Preparation
- Turn off the engine and allow it to cool down.
- Engage the parking brake and chock the wheels.
- Disconnect the negative battery terminal to prevent electrical shock.
Step 2: Access the fuel pump assembly
- Locate the fuel tank access door or panel on the underside of the vehicle.
- Remove the access door or panel to expose the fuel pump assembly.
Step 3: Remove the fuel lines
- Disconnect the fuel lines from the fuel pump assembly using the fuel line disconnect tool.
- Plug or cap the fuel lines to prevent fuel leakage.
Step 4: Remove the electrical connector
- Disconnect the electrical connector from the fuel pump assembly.
Step 5: Remove the lock ring
- Use a flat-head screwdriver to pry off the lock ring that secures the fuel pump assembly to the fuel tank.
Step 6: Remove the fuel pump assembly
- Carefully lift the fuel pump assembly out of the fuel tank.
- Be careful not to spill any fuel.
Step 7: Remove the old fuel pump
- Use a Phillips-head screwdriver to remove the screws that secure the fuel pump to the fuel pump assembly.
- Lift the fuel pump out of the assembly.
-Discard the gasket from the old fuel pump.
Step 8: Install the new fuel pump
- Place the gasket onto the new fuel pump.
- Insert the new fuel pump into the assembly and secure it with the screws.
Step 9: Reinstall the fuel pump assembly
- Carefully lower the fuel pump assembly back into the fuel tank.
- Secure the fuel pump assembly with the lock ring.
Step 10: Reconnect the electrical connector
- Connect the electrical connector to the fuel pump assembly.
Step 11: Reconnect the fuel lines
- Reconnect the fuel lines to the fuel pump assembly.
- Make sure the lines are properly seated and secure.
Step 12: Test the fuel pump
- Turn the ignition key to the "ON" position (without starting the engine) and listen for the fuel pump to run.
- You should hear a humming noise for a few seconds.
Step 13: Start the engine
- Start the engine and let it run for a few minutes.
- Check for any fuel leaks around the fuel pump assembly.
Step 14: Reinstall the access door or panel
- Reinstall the fuel tank access door or panel.
Step 15: Reconnect the negative battery terminal
- Reconnect the negative battery terminal.
The fuel pump is now replaced.
