- Use your car’s year, make and model to research the correct fuel pump.
- Ensure you have the right fuel pump before attempting the replacement.
Step 2: Gather the Right Tools
- Wrench
- Flat blade screwdriver
- Phillips head screwdriver
- Needle nose pliers
- Fuel pump removal tool
- Safety goggles
Step 3: Disconnect Battery
- Locate the battery.
- Disconnect the negative battery terminal.
Step 4: Remove Fuel Filter
- Locate the fuel line filter and unclip the fuel line.
- Remove the filter.
Step 5: Depressurize Fuel Line
- Remove the fuel cap to vent the gas tank.
- Attach a rag around the fuel line to catch any spills.
- Disconnect fuel line from assembly and let it drain into the rag.
Step 6: Drop the Fuel Tank
- Raise your car with jack stands to access the fuel tank.
- Locate the fuel tank straps and undo their bolts.
- Disconnect any additional fuel lines attached to the tank.
- Lower the fuel tank.
Step 7: Remove the Fuel Pump
- Locate the fuel pump assembly inside the fuel tank.
- Use the pump removal tool (often included with a purchased pump) to detach the fuel pump from the tank.
- Carefully remove any o-rings attached to the pump.
Step 8: Install the New Pump
- Apply a thin layer of sealant to the inside of the new pump o-ring.
- Attach the new pump to the fuel tank and screw it in.
- Reconnect the fuel lines and other previously detached components.
Step 9: Test the Fuel System
- Reconnect the battery.
- Turn on the ignition and turn on the lights to prevent the car from starting.
- The pump will power on to build up pressure.
- Listen for any unusual noises or leaks.
Step 10: Tighten the Hose Connections
- Tighten any hose connections that might be loose.
Step 11: Put everything Back
- Install the replaced fuel filter.
- Ensure all parts and components are installed securely.
- Lower your vehicle carefully.
Step 12: Start the Vehicle
- Start your car and check for any leaks or irregularities.
Step 13: Test Drive the Car
- Take the car for a test drive to ensure it is running properly and there are no issues with the fuel system.
