How do you Change the idler pulley on a 96 eldorado?

Tools and Materials Needed:

- ½ inch ratchet and socket set

- Phillips head screwdriver

- Idler pulley wrench (optional)

- New idler pulley (GM part number 10221647)

- Belt tensioner tool

- Serpentine belt (if needed)

Instructions:

1. Park your Eldorado in a safe location and turn off the engine. Allow it to cool down completely.

2. Disconnect the negative terminal of your Eldorado's battery to prevent any electrical accidents.

3. Locate the idler pulley. It is positioned near the front of the engine, on the driver's side. It is the pulley with the smooth surface that guides the serpentine belt.

4. Use the Phillips head screwdriver to remove the two screws holding the idler pulley in place. Be careful not to drop the screws.

5. Once the screws are removed, use the idler pulley wrench or a 1/2 inch ratchet and socket to loosen and remove the idler pulley.

6. Carefully inspect the idler pulley for any signs of wear, damage, or excessive play. If the pulley is damaged, replace it with a new one.

7. If you are also replacing the serpentine belt, use a belt tensioner tool to release the tension on the belt. Remove the serpentine belt.

8. Install the new idler pulley by inserting it into the bracket and aligning the holes. Secure it with the two screws that you removed earlier.

9. If you removed the serpentine belt, reinstall it now by routing it around the pulleys and tensioning it using the belt tensioner tool.

10. Reconnect the battery's negative terminal.

11. Start your Eldorado and check for any abnormal noises or vibrations. If everything seems fine, you have successfully replaced the idler pulley.

Remember, if you are not confident performing this task, it's best to consult with a qualified mechanic to ensure the proper and safe replacement of the idler pulley on your Cadillac Eldorado.
