1. Gather Materials
- New automatic transmission fluid (ATF) that meets the manufacturer's specifications
- New transmission filter (if applicable)
- Transmission pan gasket (if applicable)
- Oil drain pan
- Funnel
- Wrench set
- Rags
2. Warm Up The Transmission
- Start the engine and let it run for a few minutes.
- This helps warm up the transmission fluid and makes it easier to drain.
3. Locate the Transmission
- Depending on the vehicle model the transmission may be located under the vehicle near the front, or at the rear.
- You may need to consult the vehicle's manual for the exact location.
4. Lift Vehicle
- Use a jack and jack stands to safely lift the vehicle.
- Make sure it's stable and secure before going underneath the vehicle.
5. Locate Drain Plug
- Locate the drain plug on the transmission pan.
- It's usually a bolt or a plug with a gasket.
6. Drain Old ATF
- Place the oil drain pan underneath the transmission drain plug.
- Loosen the drain plug with a wrench to drain the old ATF.
- Allow it to drain completely.
7. Remove Transmission Pan
- Once the ATF has drained, locate the bolts holding the transmission pan in place.
- Remove the bolts to take off the pan.
- Be careful as some residual fluid might still be present.
8. Replace Transmission Filter
- Some vehicles have an inline transmission filter.
- If your vehicle has one and you're replacing it, remove it by sliding it out from its housing.
- Install the new filter as per its instructions.
9. Replace Transmission Pan Gasket
- If your transmission pan gasket is worn or damaged, replace it.
- This helps prevent leaks.
10. Reinstall Transmission Pan
- Place the new pan gasket in the correct position.
- Reattach the transmission pan with the bolts.
- Tighten the bolts evenly to ensure a secure seal.
11. Refill ATF
- Locate the transmission fill plug.
- It's usually on top of the transmission or on the side.
- Use a funnel to add the recommended amount of new ATF through the fill plug.
- Check the transmission fluid level using a transmission fluid dipstick if equipped.
12. Start Engine
- Start the engine and let it run for a few minutes.
- Shift through all gears (P, R, N, D, etc.) to circulate the new ATF throughout the transmission.
13. Recheck Fluid Level
- Check the transmission fluid level again using the dipstick if equipped.
- Make sure it's within the specified range.
14. Lower the Vehicle
- Use the jack and jack stands to safely lower the vehicle.
15. Test the Transmission
- Take a test drive to ensure that the transmission is functioning properly.
- Check for smooth gear shifts and any unusual noises.
Note:
- Always refer to the vehicle's owner's manual or workshop manual for specific instructions, recommended fluids, and safety guidelines for your particular make and model.
- If you're not comfortable performing this service, it's best to have it done by a qualified mechanic.
