- Spark plug socket (5/8-inch)
- Ratchet
- Spark plug gap gauge
- New spark plugs (4)
Instructions:
1. Disconnect the battery. This is a safety precaution to prevent the engine from starting while you are changing the spark plugs.
2. Locate the spark plugs. They are located on the top of the engine, near the front.
3. Remove the spark plug wires. Start by removing the wire from the first spark plug. Grasp the wire near the spark plug and pull it straight up.
4. Use the spark plug socket to loosen the spark plugs. Turn the socket counterclockwise until the spark plug is loose.
5. Make sure the gap between the spark plug electrodes is correct. To do this, insert the gap gauge between the electrodes. The gap should be between 0.045 and 0.054 inches (1.14 to 1.37 millimeters).
6. Screw the new spark plugs into place. Tighten them until they are snug, then add an additional 1/4 turn.
7. Reconnect the spark plug wires.
8. Start the engine and check for any leaks. If you see any leaks, tighten the spark plugs until they are snug.
Tips:
- It is a good idea to change the spark plugs on your Mazda Tribute every 60,000 miles or so. This will help to keep your engine running smoothly.
- If you have any difficulty changing the spark plugs, don't hesitate to take your car to a mechanic.
