1. Gather your tools:
- Replacement headlight bulb (check the owner's manual for the correct bulb type and size)
- Phillips head screwdriver
- Slotted screwdriver
- Small flashlight
2. Open the hood:
- Pull the hood release lever inside the car (usually located under the dashboard on the driver's side).
- Go to the front of the vehicle and lift up the hood.
- Secure the hood with the prop rod.
3. Locate the headlight assembly:
- Identify the headlight assembly that needs the bulb replacement.
- The Volvo 240 has separate headlights for high and low beams. Make sure you identify the correct assembly.
4. Remove the headlight trim:
- Remove the headlight trim or bezel by unscrewing the Phillips-head screws that secure it in place.
- If the trim is tight, you can gently pry it off using the slotted screwdriver. Be careful not to damage the trim.
5. Access the headlight bulb:
- Once you remove the trim, you can see the headlight bulb behind the housing.
- Some models have a rubber seal covering the bulb, which you can gently pry off using the slotted screwdriver.
6. Remove the old bulb:
- Grasp the bulb by its base and gently twist it counterclockwise until it comes out of the socket.
7. Install the new bulb:
- Align the new bulb with the socket and gently push it in while twisting it clockwise until it locks in place.
- Make sure the bulb is securely seated in the socket.
8. Reattach the rubber seal (if applicable):
- If your 240 has a rubber seal covering the bulb, make sure to put it back in place to ensure proper weather sealing.
9. Replace the headlight trim:
- Replace the headlight trim and secure it with the Phillips head screws you removed earlier. Tighten the screws until they are snug.
10. Close the hood:
- Release the hood prop rod and lower the hood.
- Secure the hood with the latch.
Repeat these steps for the other headlight assembly if needed.
After replacing the headlight bulbs, test them by turning on the headlights and checking if both high and low beams are functioning correctly.
