Exhaust valves are located in the cylinder head and control the flow of exhaust gases from the combustion chamber to the exhaust manifold. When the exhaust valve is open, the burned gasses are allowed to escape from the cylinder and into the exhaust system. When the exhaust valve is closed, it prevents the burned gasses from re-entering the cylinder.
Exhaust valves are made of heat-resistant materials such as stainless steel or Inconel. They are also designed to withstand the high pressures and temperatures that are present in the combustion chamber.
