During the most power stage, which is the power stroke in a four-cycle gas engine, the intake valve is completely closed and the exhaust valve is also closed. Both valves will remain closed throughout the entire power stroke in order to maintain cylinder pressure and extract maximum power from the expanding combustion gases.
