Here is the shift pattern for a 1970 VW Bug:

- 1st gear: Pull the gearstick to the right and up

- 2nd gear: Pull the gearstick down to the left

- 3rd gear: Push the gearstick up to the left

- 4th gear: Push the gearstick to the right and down

Reverse gear:

To engage reverse gear, push the gearstick down and to the right until it locks into place.
