1. Locate the accelerator cable end. Look under the dashboard, near the gas pedal. You will see a metal lever with a cable attached to it. This is the accelerator cable end.
2. Disconnect the old accelerator cable. Use a pair of pliers to remove the cotter pin that holds the accelerator cable end to the lever. Then, pull the cable end off the lever.
3. Attach the new accelerator cable to the lever. Slide the new cable end onto the lever and insert a new cotter pin to secure it.
4. Adjust the accelerator cable. There should be about 1/2 inch (13 mm) of free play in the accelerator cable. To adjust the cable, turn the adjusting nut on the end of the cable. Turning the nut clockwise will tighten the cable and reduce the free play.
5. Test the accelerator cable. Press the gas pedal and make sure that the carburetor opens smoothly and fully. If the accelerator cable is properly adjusted, the carburetor will open smoothly and fully without binding or sticking.
Here are some additional tips for connecting the accelerator cable to the gas pedal on a 1974 VW Super Beetle:
* Make sure that the accelerator cable is routed correctly. The cable should run from the carburetor to the gas pedal without any sharp bends or kinks.
* Make sure that the accelerator cable is not too tight. If the cable is too tight, it will bind and prevent the carburetor from opening fully.
* Make sure that the accelerator cable is not too loose. If the cable is too loose, it will not be able to open the carburetor fully.
