What is the maximum speed when towing an aircraft?

Towing aircraft require different speeds for taxi, takeoff, en route, landing, and stopping the tow. Maximum allowable speed for ground towing may range from as low as 5–8 mph to as high as 15–25 mph and depends on several factors that vary for each airplane model:

a. Type or condition of runway, ramp, or taxiway.

b. Length of tow.

c. Size and design of tow vehicle and equipment.

d. Tire tread design of airplane and tug.

e. Condition of wheel brakes.

f. Number of turns, corners, or changes in travel

direction.

g. Visibility to both crew members.

h. Weather conditions.

i. Other hazards that warrant additional safety

précautions.
