- The top ring is the thinnest of the three rings and has a chamfered (beveled) edge on the upper side.
- The chamfered edge should face up towards the cylinder head.
Middle Ring (Compression Ring):
- The middle ring is slightly thicker than the top ring and has a chamfered edge on the lower side.
- The chamfered edge should face down toward the piston skirt.
Bottom Ring (Oil Control Ring):
- The bottom ring is the thickest of the three rings and has a spring-loaded expander behind it.
- The expander should be installed with its ends overlapping and facing in opposite directions.
- The oil control ring should be installed with the spring-loaded expander facing down toward the piston skirt.
Installing the Rings:
1. Place the top ring on the piston with the chamfered edge facing up.
2. Use a ring expander to compress the ring and slide it into the ring groove.
3. Repeat steps 1 and 2 for the middle ring, but with the chamfered edge facing down.
4. Place the bottom ring on the piston with the spring-loaded expander facing down.
5. Use a ring expander to compress the ring and slide it into the ring groove.
6. Check that all of the rings are properly seated in their grooves.
