Find the timing mark on the flywheel. This is a small notch in the edge of the flywheel.
Remove the spark plug wire from the spark plug.
Turn the engine crankshaft until the timing mark on the flywheel is aligned with the pointer on the engine case.
Insert a 0.020-inch feeler gauge between the points and the cam lobe.
Adjust the points so that the feeler gauge fits snugly between the points and the cam lobe.
Tighten the points lock nut.
Reattach the spark plug wire to the spark plug.
