1. Disconnect battery ground cable.
1. Follow the negative battery cable from the battery (usually black) until you reach the ground connection.
2. Loosen the nut or bolt holding the cable to the ground point, and then remove the cable and put it aside.
2. Locate starter motor.
1. The starter motor is located on the right side of the engine, below the carburetors.
2. It is a cylindrical-shaped component with two electrical terminals and a gear that engages with the flywheel.
3. Remove bolts from the top and bottom of the starter motor.
1. Use the 14mm socket to remove the two bolts that hold the starter motor to the engine.
2. Be careful not to drop the bolts.
4. Remove starter motor from the motorcycle.
1. Use the pry bar to pry the starter motor away from the engine.
2. Again be careful not to drop it.
5. Replace starter motor.
1. Place the new starter motor in position.
2. Insert the bolts that you removed in step 3 and hand tighten.
3. Tighten the bolts to the specifications in your repair manual, using a torque wrench.
6. Reattach the battery ground cable.
1. Reinstall the battery by placing it back in the battery tray and securing with the hold down strap.
2. Reconnect the negative battery cable to ground by placing the cable back on the ground point, then reinstalling the nut or bolt and tighten it.
Tips:
* Apply a thin coat of anti-seize compound to the threads of the bolts before installing them.
* Be careful not to over-tighten the bolts.
* If the starter motor is stuck, you may need to use a penetrating oil to loosen it.
