Gather your materials. You will need:
New oil (SAE 30 or SAE 5W-30)
Oil filter (if applicable)
Funnel
Clean rag
Prepare the snow thrower. Park the snow thrower on a level surface. Turn off the engine and allow it to cool down completely. Engage the parking brake.
Locate the oil drain plug. The oil drain plug is usually located on the bottom of the engine, near the oil filter.
Place the oil pan under the oil drain plug. Make sure the pan is large enough to catch all of the oil that will drain out.
Remove the oil drain plug. Use a wrench to loosen the oil drain plug and remove it. Be careful not to drop the plug into the oil pan.
Allow the oil to drain. Allow all of the oil to drain out of the engine. This may take several minutes.
Replace the oil drain plug. Once all of the oil has drained out, replace the oil drain plug. Tighten the plug until it is snug.
Locate the oil fill cap. The oil fill cap is usually located on the top of the engine.
Remove the oil fill cap. Use a wrench to loosen the oil fill cap and remove it.
Add new oil. Use the funnel to add new oil to the engine. Add the amount of oil specified in the snow thrower’s owner’s manual.
Replace the oil fill cap. Once you have added the correct amount of oil, replace the oil fill cap. Tighten the cap until it is snug.
Check the oil level. Use the dipstick to check the oil level. The oil level should be between the “full” and “add” marks on the dipstick.
Start the snow thrower. Let the snow thrower run for a few minutes to circulate the new oil.
Check for leaks. Look for any leaks around the oil drain plug and oil fill cap. If you see any leaks, tighten the plugs until the leaks stop.
You have now successfully changed the oil on your Yard Machine snow thrower.
