1. Find the VIN (Vehicle Identification Number) of the car. It can be found on the lower left side of the dashboard by looking through the front windshield, or in the engine compartment on a metal plate near the battery.
2. If there is an existing ignition key, that could be taken to a hardware store or locksmith for duplication. However, if there is not any key, it can be tricky, but there are a couple of options:
- The first option is to remove the ignition switch. It can be found on the left side of the steering column. There will be a plate held on by two screws at the top of the housing, and remove that. Disconnect the wires and unscrew the ignition lock cylinder assembly from the steering column and take the assembly to a locksmith or auto parts store.
- Another option is to have a locksmith make a key based on the VIN of the vehicle. Some auto parts stores are now able to do the same based on the VIN number as well.
3. Once the new key has been created, it should be tested in the ignition to make sure it works properly.
