Step 1: Prep the Car
- Park the vehicle on a level surface, apply the parking brake, and turn off the engine.
- Allow the engine and vehicle to cool sufficiently before starting work.
Step 2: Access the Slave Cylinder
- Locate the hydraulic clutch line and trace it until you find where it connects to the slave cylinder.
- Disconnect the clutch line from the slave cylinder using a 5/8-inch and an 11/16-inch wrench. Allow the fluid to drain into a pan or container.
Step 3: Remove the Old Slave Cylinder
- Use a screwdriver and pliers to remove the two bolts securing the slave cylinder to the transmission housing.
- Carefully remove the old slave cylinder from the transmission housing. Note the position and orientation of the old cylinder for proper reinstallation of the new one.
Step 4: Install the New Slave Cylinder
- Insert the new slave cylinder into the transmission housing and secure it using the two bolts you removed earlier. Make sure to follow the original bolt pattern and position and ensure that the new cylinder lines up with the hydraulic clutch line.
Step 5: Reconnect the Clutch Line
- Reattach the clutch line to the slave cylinder and tighten it securely.
Step 6: Fill and Bleed the System
- Remove the fluid reservoir cap using the fluid reservoir cap wrench.
- Refill the reservoir with DOT3 or DOT4 brake fluid. Do not overfill the reservoir.
- Bleed the clutch hydraulic system by opening the bleeder screw on the slave cylinder and pumping the clutch pedal until clear fluid comes out of the bleeder screw. Tighten the bleeder screw once the air bubbles are removed.
Step 7: Test the Clutch
- Start the vehicle and depress the clutch pedal. The pedal should move smoothly and engage and disengage the clutch effectively.
Step 8: Clean Up
- Clean up any spilled brake fluid from the work area.
Your Saab's slave cylinder has now been successfully replaced.
