Option 1: Using a Scan Tool:
1. Purchase or borrow a scan tool that is compatible with your vehicle's OBD-II system.
2. Locate the OBD-II port in your car. It's usually found under the dashboard on the driver's side.
3. Connect the scan tool to the OBD-II port.
4. Turn on the ignition, but do not start the engine.
5. Select the option to read trouble codes from the scan tool's menu.
6. The scan tool will display any stored trouble codes and their descriptions.
7. Once you have noted down the trouble codes, select the option to clear or erase the trouble codes.
8. The check engine light should turn off after the codes have been cleared.
Option 2: Disconnecting the Battery (Not Recommended):
Note: Disconnecting the battery may reset other electronic settings in your car, including radio presets and clock settings.
1. Ensure that the engine is completely off and the ignition key is removed.
2. Open the hood of your car.
3. Locate the negative battery terminal (usually marked with a "-" sign).
4. Disconnect the negative battery cable from the battery terminal using a wrench.
5. Wait for about 30 seconds to a minute.
6. Reconnect the negative battery cable to the battery terminal.
7. Start the engine and check if the check engine light has turned off.
Note: If you attempt to reset the check engine light using Option 2, the stored trouble codes may not be erased. In this case, it's recommended to have your vehicle scanned by a qualified technician to accurately diagnose and resolve the underlying issue that caused the check engine light to come on in the first place.
