How do you install a belt on L1742 lawn tractor?

To install a new belt on a Craftsman L1742 lawn tractor, follow the steps outlined below.

Disconnect The Battery

1. Disconnect the battery and remove the seat to allow easier access to the belt area.

Remove The Cowling

2. Remove the deck access cover (cowling) to expose the belt. It may be secured by bolts, pins, or screws.

Remove The Old Belt

3. Look for the idler pulley which is directly beneath the idler arm with a tension spring attached.

4. Rotate the idler counter-clockwise to release tension and remove the old belt.

Install New Belt

5. Place the new belt around the idler pulley and all pulleys except for the PTO pulley at the front.

6. Ensure the belt is routed properly according to the mower's diagram, which should be located on the underside of the tractor's cowling.

7. Rotate the idler pulley counter-clockwise to apply tension to the belt and secure it by rotating it clockwise.

Ensure Proper Belt Tension

8. Check that the belt is neither too tight nor too loose. You should be able to press down on the belt, about midway between the pulleys. If it flexes more than about an inch, tighten the belt.

Reconnect Battery and Replace Cowling

9. Reconnect the battery and replace the deck access cover (cowling).

10. Double-check that the new belt is properly seated on all pulleys and there is sufficient tension before closing everything up to ensure smooth operation.
