How do you remove the large idler pulley just below AC compressor on a 98 GMC Surburban?

To remove the idler pulley below the AC compressor on a 98 GMC Suburban, follow these steps:

1. Park the vehicle on a level surface and engage the parking brake. Turn the engine off and allow it to cool down.

2. Open the hood and locate the idler pulley. It is located just below the AC compressor, on the passenger side of the engine.

3. Loosen the serpentine belt tensioner to relieve tension on the belt. To do this, insert a 1/2-inch breaker bar into the square hole in the tensioner and turn it clockwise.

4. Once the tension is relieved, remove the serpentine belt by sliding it off the pulleys.

5. Remove the mounting bolts that hold the idler pulley in place. There are two bolts that need to be removed.

6. Once the bolts are removed, the idler pulley can be removed.

7. Inspect the idler pulley for any damage or wear. If the pulley is damaged or worn, it should be replaced.

8. Install the new idler pulley (if needed). Reverse the steps above to install the new idler pulley.

9. Reinstall the serpentine belt. Start by feeding the belt over the crankshaft pulley and then over the other pulleys in the correct sequence.

10. Once the belt is installed, tighten the serpentine belt tensioner by turning the 1/2-inch breaker bar counterclockwise.

11. Ensure the serpentine belt is taut, but not too tight.

12. Close the hood and start the engine. Check for any unusual noises or vibrations that could indicate a problem with the idler pulley or serpentine belt.
