What does the GL mean on Mercedes 450?

GL stands for "Grand Luxury" and is used by Mercedes-Benz to designate their larger and more luxurious SUVs. The GL-Class was introduced in 2006 and is currently in its third generation. The current GL-Class is available in two models, the GL 450 and the GL 550. The GL 450 is powered by a 3.0-liter turbocharged V6 engine that produces 362 horsepower and 384 pound-feet of torque. The GL 550 is powered by a 4.7-liter turbocharged V8 engine that produces 449 horsepower and 516 pound-feet of torque. Both models are available with either rear-wheel drive or four-wheel drive.
