How do you change a timing belt in 1988 Mazda 626?

**Tools needed:

**

-10mm socket

- 12mm socket

-14mm socket

-3/8" ratchet

-3/8" breaker bar

-3/8" extension

- flathead screwdriver

-Timing Belt

**Procedure:

**

1. Start by removing the timing cover. There are several bolts holding it in place, so use the appropriate socket to remove them all.

2. Once the timing cover is removed, you will need to remove the serpentine belt. To do this, use a 12mm socket to turn the tensioner pulley counterclockwise. This will loosen the belt, and you can then remove it by hand.

3. Now that the serpentine belt is removed, you will need to remove the crankshaft bolt. This bolt is tightened to a very high torque, so you will need to use a breaker bar to loosen it. Be sure to use the correct socket size (14mm) to avoid stripping the bolt.

4. Once the crankshaft bolt is removed, you can remove the timing belt. Simply slide it off of the pulleys.

5. Before you can install the new timing belt, you will need to set the timing marks. This can be done using a flathead screwdriver. To set the timing marks,

- Insert the screwdriver into the hole on the back of the crankshaft pulley.

- Turn the crankshaft until the screwdriver points to the 0-degree mark on the flywheel.

-Insert the screwdriver into the hole on the camshaft pulley.

-Turn the camshaft until the screwdriver points to the 0-degree mark on the camshaft sprocket.

6. Once the timing marks are set, you can install the new timing belt. Start by slipping it over the crankshaft pulley, then the water pump pulley, and then the camshaft pulley.

7. Once the timing belt is installed, you can re-install the serpentine belt. To do this, simply slide it over the pulleys and then use the tensioner pulley to tighten it.

8. Finally, you can re-install the timing cover and the crankshaft bolt. Tighten the crankshaft bolt to the specified torque setting (50 ft-lbs).

9. Double check that the timing marks line up.

Now that the timing belt is changed, you can start your car and enjoy your new ride.
