1. Park your car on a level surface and turn off the engine.
2. Open the hood of your car.
3. Locate the alternator. It is usually mounted on the front of the engine, near the top.
4. Find the tension bolt. It is usually located on the side of the alternator, near the top.
5. Loosen the tension bolt with a wrench. Turn the bolt counterclockwise until you can remove it by hand.
6. Remove the tension bolt.
7. Once the tension bolt is removed, you can slide the alternator out of its mounting bracket.
