1. Gather Your Tools:
- Penetrating oil (such as WD-40)
- Socket set with various sizes of sockets
- Open-end wrenches
- Adjustable wrench
- Hacksaw
- Safety goggles
- Gloves
2. Prepare the Area:
- Park your Cadillac in a well-ventilated area.
- Engage the parking brake.
- Allow the engine to cool down completely.
3. Locate the Broken Screw:
- Identify the broken screw on the exhaust manifold to downpipe.
- Make sure you have clear access to the area around the screw.
4. Apply Penetrating Oil:
- Spray the broken screw with penetrating oil and allow it to sit for a few minutes. This will help loosen the screw and make it easier to remove.
5. Use the Appropriate Socket:
- Choose a socket that fits snugly over the broken screw.
- Attach the socket to a ratchet and turn it counterclockwise to try and loosen the screw.
6. Use an Open-End Wrench:
- If you cannot loosen the screw with a socket, use an open-end wrench.
- Place the wrench over the head of the broken screw and turn it counterclockwise.
7. Use an Adjustable Wrench:
- If the screw is still stuck, use an adjustable wrench to grip the head of the screw.
- Turn the adjustable wrench counterclockwise to break the screw loose.
8. Use a Hacksaw:
- If you are unable to loosen the screw with any of the above methods, you may need to use a hacksaw.
- Place the hacksaw against the head of the screw and carefully saw through it.
- Make sure to wear safety goggles while using the hacksaw.
9. Remove the Broken Screw Pieces:
- Once the screw is cut, remove the pieces of the broken screw from the exhaust manifold and downpipe.
- Be careful not to drop any pieces into the engine.
10. Clean the Area:
- Clean the exhaust manifold and downpipe to remove any remaining pieces of the screw and debris.
11. Replace the Screw:
- Use a new screw to replace the broken screw.
- Tighten the screw securely using a socket and ratchet.
12. Test the Repair:
- Start your Cadillac and let it run for a few minutes.
- Check for any leaks from the exhaust manifold to downpipe connection.
If you have successfully removed the broken screw and replaced it with a new one, the exhaust system should be functioning properly again.
