1. Remove the spark plug wire from the spark plug (wear safety glasses).
2. Remove the flywheel shroud.
3. Set the piston at top dead center (TDC). To do this, insert a screwdriver into the spark plug hole and turn the crankshaft until the piston rises to the top of its stroke and the screwdriver just starts to come out of the hole. This will ensure the engine is at the top of its compression cycle.
4. Remove the flywheel nut and take off the flywheel.
4. Remove the points plate from the engine block.
5. Loosen the two screws holding the condenser to the points plate, and set the points gap to .020-.025 in (0.5-0.6 mm). Be sure to check and adjust both sets of points. To adjust the points gap, bend the wire that connects one set of points to the ground. Use a feeler gauge to help get the correct measurement.
6. Tighten the two screws holding the condenser to the points plate, and rotate the points plate back into place.
7. Place the flywheel back on the engine, taking care not to damage the key or shear pins.
8. Replace the flywheel nut and tighten it to the specified torque.
9. Replace the flywheel shroud.
10. Reconnect the spark plug wire.
Now that you have adjusted the timing on your 17.5 Briggs and Stratton lawnmower engine, it should be running smoothly. If you have any questions, please consult your owner's manual or a qualified mechanic.
