1. Park your vehicle on level ground and allow the engine to cool down.
2. Open the hood of your Xterra.
3. Locate the oil dipstick. It is usually marked with a yellow handle.
4. Pull out the dipstick and wipe it clean with a paper towel.
5. Reinsert the dipstick all the way back into the tube.
6. Pull out the dipstick again and check the oil level. The oil should be between the "full" and "add" marks on the dipstick.
7. If the oil level is low, you will need to add oil to the engine.
8. To do this, find the oil fill cap. It is usually located near the oil dipstick.
9. Remove the oil fill cap and add oil to the engine. Use the type of oil specified in your owner's manual.
10. Replace the oil fill cap and dipstick.
11. Close the hood of your Xterra.
The oil pan is located under the engine. It is a metal pan that holds the engine oil. The oil pan is usually bolted to the engine block.
