- 1. Bad Starter:
The starter is the single most common cause of a vehicle that cranks but won’t start. There are a few problems that can occur with a starter that would prevent it from engaging the flywheel and starting the engine. These include:
- Worn or damaged starter drive
- Bad solenoid
- Faulty wiring
- 2. Bad Battery:
A weak battery that doesn’t have enough power to crank the engine fast enough can also cause this problem.
- 3. Bad Battery Connections:
Corrosion, grease, dirt and other debris can all build up on the battery terminals and cable ends, preventing a good electrical connection. This will limit the amount of power the starter can draw from the battery, even if the battery itself is in good shape.
- 4. Bad Ignition Switch:
The ignition switch is responsible for sending power to the starter solenoid. If the switch is faulty, it can interrupt this circuit and prevent the starter from engaging. Common problems include a worn or damaged electrical connector, a bad ignition key switch, or faulty wiring.
- 5. Neutral Safety Switch:
If the neutral safety switch on your truck is malfunctioning, it could cause the starter to only work sometimes. This switch prevents the starter from engaging unless the transmission is in neutral (or park for an automatic). If the switch fails, the starter may not be able to engage the flywheel, even if the key is turned to the start position.
Check the following things in this order:
- Check for loose or damaged wiring connections to the starter solenoid. Clean and tighten or replace as necessary.
- Remove the starter motor from the vehicle and check the starter drive and solenoid for damage or wear. Replace as necessary.
- Check the battery for sufficient voltage. If the battery is weak, have it tested and replaced as necessary.
- Check the ignition switch for proper function. If the ignition switch is faulty, replace it.
-Inspect the neutral safety switch. Check the switch itself, as well as the wiring leading up to the switch. If the neutral safety switch is damaged, it may need to be repaired or replaced.
