* Jack and jack stands
* Socket set
* Pry bar
* Crescent wrench
* Oxygen sensor socket (optional)
* New catalytic converter
* Gaskets (if required)
Jack the vehicle up and remove the oxygen sensors. Place the jack stands underneath the car, near the front wheels, to support it. Locate the oxygen sensors that are connected to the catalytic converter. There should be two sensors, one on each side. Use the oxygen sensor socket (or a regular socket) to loosen the sensors until you can remove them by hand.
Disconnect the exhaust pipes. Use the socket set to loosen the bolts that connect the exhaust pipes to the catalytic converter. After you have loosened all the bolts, you may be able to remove the exhaust pipes by pulling on them. If the exhaust pipes do not loosen easily, you may need to pry them off with the pry bar. Be careful not to damage the oxygen sensors or the exhaust system.
Remove the old catalytic converter. Once you have disconnected the oxygen sensors and the exhaust pipes, remove the bolts that hold the catalytic converter to the exhaust manifold. There should be four bolts on each side. Use the pry bar to pry the old catalytic converter off the exhaust manifold.
Install the new catalytic converter. Place the new catalytic converter in the same position as the old one. Attach the bolts to the exhaust manifold and tighten them until they are snug.
Reattach the exhaust pipes. Reattach the exhaust pipes to the catalytic converter and tighten the bolts until they are snug. Do not overtighten the bolts, or you could damage the exhaust system.
Reconnect the oxygen sensors. Connect the oxygen sensors to the catalytic converter and tighten them until they are snug.
Lower the vehicle Jack down. Lower the jack and remove the jack stands.
