Step 1: Park the vehicle and put it in neutral
Step 2: Connect the timing light to the battery and the spark plug wire on cylinder number 1.
Step 3: Start the truck and let it run until it reaches normal operating temperature.
Step 4: Locate the timing marks on the engine; typically, they are located near the crankshaft pulley and the camshaft sprocket. Turn the timing marks until they are aligned.
Step 5: While holding the timing light, aim it at the timing marks on the engine. You will see a bright flash of light when the spark plug fires.
Step 6: Adjust the distributor until the timing light flash aligns with the timing marks on the engine. Tighten the distributor hold-down bolt once the timing is correct.
Step 7: Disconnect the timing light and turn off the truck.
