How do you replace the speedometer cable on a 1987 Mustang LX 5.0?

Replacing the speedometer cable on your 1987 Mustang LX 5.0 follows these general steps:

Tools and Materials Needed:

1. Replacement Speedometer Cable

2. Pliers

3. Screwdriver

4. 10mm Socket Wrench

5. Ratchet

6. Safety Goggles

Steps:

Step 1: Disconnect Battery

Disconnect the negative terminal of your car battery to prevent any electrical accidents while working.

Step 2: Locate Speedometer Cable

Underneath the dashboard, near the steering column, you will find the speedometer cable. It's usually connected to the back of the speedometer.

Step 3: Disconnect Speedometer Cable

Using a screwdriver or a 10mm socket wrench, depending on the type of fastener used, loosen the clamp or nut holding the speedometer cable to the speedometer housing. Gently pull the cable out to disconnect it.

Step 4: Remove Speedometer Cable from Firewall

Follow the speedometer cable from the speedometer to where it enters the firewall. Using pliers or a screwdriver, remove any clips or grommets holding the cable to the firewall. Pull the cable out from the engine compartment.

Step 5: Disconnect Speedometer Cable from Transmission

Crawl underneath your car and find the transmission. The other end of the speedometer cable is connected to the transmission near the speedometer housing. Use a 10mm socket wrench or pliers to loosen the nut or clamp securing the cable to the transmission. Then disconnect the cable.

Step 6: Remove Old Cable

Pull the old speedometer cable completely out of the car, from the engine compartment to underneath the car.

Step 7: Install New Speedometer Cable

Take the new speedometer cable and route it through the firewall. Connect it to the transmission first, then to the speedometer. Make sure the cable is securely attached at both ends.

Step 8: Reconnect Battery

Reconnect the negative terminal of the car battery.

Step 9: Test Speedometer

Start your car and check if the speedometer is working correctly. Drive the car to ensure the speedometer provides accurate speed readings.

Note: If you're not comfortable working with automotive parts and systems, it's recommended to have a qualified mechanic perform the speedometer cable replacement.
