Instructions
1. Remove the valve cover.
- Remove the 17 bolts that hold the valve cover in place.
- Loosen the valve cover using a pry bar.
- Remove the valve cover from the head.
- Inspect the valve cover gasket for damage and replace it if necessary.
2. Remove the timing cover.
- Remove the 13 bolts that hold the timing cover in place.
- Remove the timing cover from the head.
- Inspect the timing cover gasket for damage and replace it if necessary.
3. Remove the camshaft and crankshaft locks.
- Remove the 13 bolts that hold the camshaft lock in place.
- Remove the camshaft lock from the head.
- Remove the 2 bolts that hold the crankshaft lock in place.
- Remove the crankshaft lock from the block.
4. Remove the timing chain.
- Remove the 2 bolts that hold the timing chain tensioner in place.
- Remove the timing chain tensioner from the head.
- Slide the timing chain off the sprockets.
- Inspect the timing chain for damage and replace it if necessary.
5. Install the new timing chain.
- Slide the new timing chain onto the sprockets.
- Install the timing chain tensioner and tighten the bolts to 25 Nm.
- Turn the crankshaft clockwise until the TDC indicator is aligned with the mark on the oil pump housing.
- Install the camshaft lock and tighten the bolts to 20 Nm.
- Install the crankshaft lock and tighten the bolts to 20 Nm.
6. Install the timing cover.
- Apply a thin coat of sealant to the new timing cover gasket.
- Install the timing cover and tighten the bolts to 10 Nm.
7. Install the valve cover.
- Apply a thin coat of sealant to the new valve cover gasket.
- Install the valve cover and tighten the bolts to 10 Nm.
8. Remove the camshaft and crankshaft locks.
- Remove the 13 bolts that hold the camshaft lock in place.
- Remove the camshaft lock from the head.
- Remove the 2 bolts that hold the crankshaft lock in place.
- Remove the crankshaft lock from the block.
9. Install the oil pan.
- Apply a thin coat of sealant to the new oil pan gasket.
- Install the oil pan and tighten the bolts to 15 Nm.
10. Add engine oil to the engine.
- Add engine oil to the engine until the oil level is between the "Add" and "Full" marks on the dipstick.
11. Start the engine and check for leaks.
- Start the engine and let it run for a few minutes.
- Check for leaks from the timing cover, valve cover, oil pan, and camshaft and crankshaft seals.
12. Enjoy your newly timed Mercedes-Benz 308d!
