- Ensure that the engine is cool.
- Disconnect the vacuum hose from the distributor vacuum advance port.
- Connect a timing light to the engine.
- Start the engine and let it run until it reaches normal operating temperature.
- There are two timing marks on the engine:
- One on the crankshaft pulley
- One on the timing chain cover
- The marks should line up when the engine is at Top Dead Center (TDC).
- If the marks do not line up, you need to adjust the timing.
- To do this, loosen the distributor hold-down bolt and rotate the distributor clockwise or counterclockwise until the marks line up.
- Tighten the hold-down bolt once the marks are aligned.
- Reconnect the vacuum hose.
- Once you have adjusted the timing, check it again to make sure it is correct.
- Start the engine and let it run until it reaches normal operating temperature.
- Shine the timing light on the engine.
- The timing mark should now be aligned with the pointer.
_Note: If you are not comfortable adjusting the timing on your engine, you can take it to a qualified mechanic._
