The 1988 Dodge Shadow is a front-wheel-drive compact car that was produced by the Chrysler Corporation from 1987 to 1994. The Shadow was offered with a variety of engines, including a 2.2L four-cylinder engine and a 2.5L V6 engine. All models were equipped with a three-speed automatic transmission or a five-speed manual transmission.
The type of transmission fluid that you need for your 1988 Dodge Shadow will depend on the type of transmission that your vehicle is equipped with.
* Automatic Transmission: If your Shadow has an automatic transmission, you will need to use a Dexron® II ATF (automatic transmission fluid).
* Manual Transmission: If your Shadow has a manual transmission, you will need to use a SAE 75W-90 GL-4 gear oil.
Changing the Transmission Fluid
The transmission fluid in your 1988 Dodge Shadow should be changed every 30,000 miles or every two years, whichever comes first. You can change the transmission fluid yourself or have it done by a qualified mechanic.
To change the transmission fluid, you will need the following tools and materials:
* New transmission fluid (Dexron® II ATF for automatic transmissions, SAE 75W-90 GL-4 gear oil for manual transmissions)
* A funnel
* A wrench
* A drain pan
* Rags
Instructions:
1. Park your Shadow on a level surface and turn off the engine.
2. Crawl under the vehicle and locate the transmission fluid drain plug. The drain plug is usually located on the bottom of the transmission pan.
3. Place the drain pan under the drain plug and loosen the drain plug with the wrench.
4. Allow the old transmission fluid to drain into the drain pan.
5. Once the old transmission fluid has drained, replace the drain plug.
6. Lift the car off of the jack stands.
7. Open the hood of your Shadow and locate the transmission fluid dipstick. The dipstick is usually located near the back of the engine.
8. Pull the dipstick out and wipe it clean with a rag.
9. Insert the dipstick back into the transmission until it is fully seated.
10. Pull the dipstick out again and check the transmission fluid level. The transmission fluid level should be between the "Full" and "Add" marks on the dipstick.
11. If the transmission fluid level is low, add new transmission fluid through the dipstick tube.
12. Repeat steps 9-11 until the transmission fluid level is correct.
13. Replace the dipstick.
That's it! You have now changed the transmission fluid in your 1988 Dodge Shadow.
