Tools and Materials needed:
- Lug wrench
- Jack and jack stands
- Socket wrench set
-Flathead screwdriver
- Hammer
- Wire brush
- Brake cleaner
- New brake rotors
- Brake pads (if necessary)
Procedure:
1. Prepare the vehicle:
- Park your Xterra on a flat surface and apply the parking brake.
- Use the lug wrench to loosen the lug nuts on the wheels (do not remove them completely yet).
2. Raise the vehicle:
- Place the jack under the appropriate lifting point on the frame of your Xterra.
- Raise the vehicle until the wheel you want to work on is off the ground.
- Secure the vehicle using jack stands.
3. Remove the wheel:
- Remove the lug nuts and take off the wheel.
4. Remove the brake caliper:
- Locate the brake caliper, which is mounted over the rotor.
- Use a socket wrench to remove the bolts that secure the caliper.
- Gently slide the caliper off the rotor without straining the brake line.
- Hang the caliper out of the way using a piece of wire or string.
5. Remove the old rotor:
- Inspect the old rotor for any damage or excessive wear.
- If the rotor is significantly worn or warped, it's time to replace it.
- Use a hammer to gently tap the edges of the rotor from different sides to loosen it.
- Once loosened, remove the old rotor.
6. Clean the hub:
- Use a wire brush to clean the hub surface where the rotor sits.
- Make sure to remove any rust, dirt, or debris.
7. Install the new rotor:
- Place the new rotor onto the hub.
- Hand-tighten the lug nuts to secure the rotor in place.
8. Reinstall the brake caliper:
- Carefully align the brake caliper with the rotor.
- Install the caliper mounting bolts and tighten them securely.
9. Reinstall the wheel:
- Place the wheel back onto the hub.
- Hand-tighten the lug nuts.
- Lower the vehicle using the jack.
- Fully tighten the lug nuts with the lug wrench in a star pattern to ensure even tightening.
10. Repeat the process:
- Repeat steps 3-9 for the other wheel if necessary.
11. Test the brakes:
- After replacing the rotors, it's crucial to test the brakes.
- Start the vehicle and gently apply the brakes to check for any unusual sounds or vibrations.
- Perform a few test stops at low speeds to make sure the brakes are functioning properly.
Remember that brake work can be potentially dangerous, so if you're not confident in your abilities or have any concerns, it's best to consult with a professional mechanic or refer to a detailed repair manual for your specific vehicle model.
