• Gather your tools and materials. You will need a new fuel filter, a fuel filter wrench, a screwdriver, and a funnel.
• Prepare your vehicle. Turn off the engine and allow it to cool down. Engage the parking brake and chock the wheels. Locate the fuel filter, which is usually located near the fuel tank.
• Relieve the fuel pressure. This is an important safety step that helps prevent fuel from spraying out when you disconnect the fuel lines. To relieve the fuel pressure, turn the ignition key to the "On" position (do not start the engine) and then turn it back to the "Off" position. Repeat this process several times.
• Disconnect the fuel lines. Use the fuel filter wrench to loosen the fuel line fittings on both sides of the fuel filter. Be careful not to spill any fuel.
• Remove the old fuel filter. Once the fuel lines are disconnected, you can remove the old fuel filter by unscrewing it from the fuel line bracket.
• Install the new fuel filter. Screw the new fuel filter into the fuel line bracket. Hand-tighten the filter until it is snug, then use the fuel filter wrench to tighten it an additional 1/4 to 1/2 turn.
• Reconnect the fuel lines. Connect the fuel lines to the fuel filter fittings and tighten the fittings with the fuel filter wrench.
• Start the engine and check for leaks. Start the engine and let it run for a few minutes. Check for any leaks around the fuel filter and fuel lines. If you see any leaks, tighten the fittings until the leaks stop.
• That's it! You have now successfully replaced the fuel filter on your 2002 Ford Explorer.
