The speedometer cable on a 1996 Ford Explorer is located behind the instrument cluster. To access the speedometer cable, you will need to remove the instrument cluster bezel and the instrument cluster.
Here are the steps on how to remove the instrument cluster bezel and the instrument cluster:
1. Remove the two screws that hold the instrument cluster bezel in place.
2. Pull the instrument cluster bezel straight out to remove it.
3. Remove the four screws that hold the instrument cluster in place.
4. Carefully pull the instrument cluster straight out to remove it.
Once the instrument cluster is removed, you will be able to see the speedometer cable. It is a black cable that is connected to the speedometer head. To remove the speedometer cable, simply disconnect it from the speedometer head.
Note: Be careful not to lose the small O-ring that is located on the end of the speedometer cable. This O-ring is necessary to prevent leaks.
