What is the ignition timing for a 1968 Chevy 396 big block?

Ignition Timing for a 1968 Chevrolet 396 Big Block

- Base timing: 8° - 10° BTDC

- Maximum timing advance: 32° - 36° BTDC

- Vacuum advance: 12° - 15°

- Initial timing: 12° - 14° BTDC (with vacuum advance disconnected and plugged)

Note: These timing specifications are for a stock engine with a Points distributor. If your engine has been modified, or you are using a different type of distributor, the timing may need to be adjusted accordingly.

To set the ignition timing:

- Disconnect and plug the vacuum advance hose from the distributor.

- Start the engine and let it warm up to operating temperature.

- Using a timing light, observe the timing marks on the crankshaft and harmonic balancer.

- Using a wrench turn the distributor until the desired ignition timing is achieved.

- Tighten the distributor hold down clamp.

- Reconnect the vacuum advance hose to the distributor.
