Tools You'll Need:

* Possibly a small flathead screwdriver (for prying gently, if necessary)
* Socket wrench (may be needed depending on the condition of the screws)
* New taillights
* Shop rags or paper towels
Procedure:
1. Disconnect the Battery: This is crucial to prevent accidental short circuits. Disconnect the negative (-) terminal first.
2. Remove the Chrome Bezel: The taillight assembly is held in place by a chrome bezel. Carefully inspect the bezel for screws. Most likely, there are screws holding it to the body. Use your Phillips head screwdriver to remove these screws. Sometimes the screws are concealed beneath small caps, which might require gentle prying with a flathead screwdriver (be extremely gentle to avoid scratching the chrome). Once the screws are out, the bezel should gently come away from the body.
3. Disconnect the Wiring Harness: Once the bezel is removed, you'll see the wiring harness connected to the taillight assembly. Carefully disconnect the connectors. Take note of how they are connected so you can reassemble them correctly. A photo is a good idea.
4. Remove the Taillight Assembly: The taillight assembly itself is usually held in place by either more screws or just pressure. Gently work it loose. If screws are present, remove them. If not, carefully work it free, perhaps using gentle prying with a flathead (again, be gentle!).
5. Install the New Taillight: Carefully insert the new taillight assembly into place. If it uses screws, secure them.
6. Reconnect the Wiring Harness: Connect the wiring harness to the new taillight assembly, matching the connectors precisely.
7. Reinstall the Chrome Bezel: Carefully position the chrome bezel back onto the body and reattach the screws. Make sure everything lines up properly.
8. Reconnect the Battery: Reconnect the negative (-) battery terminal.
9. Test the Lights: Turn on your taillights and make sure both brake lights, turn signals, and running lights are functioning correctly.
Important Notes:
* Be Gentle: The chrome bezels and the taillight housings on these cars are often fragile due to age. Avoid using excessive force at any stage of the process.
* Take Pictures: Before you start disconnecting anything, take photos of the wiring and how the bezel is attached. This will be invaluable when reassembling.
* Repair Manual: A 1972 Corvette repair manual is highly recommended. It will have detailed diagrams and instructions specific to your vehicle.
* Bulb Replacement: While you're at it, consider replacing the bulbs in the taillight assembly. They're relatively inexpensive and easy to replace, and doing it now prevents having to repeat the whole process again soon.
If you are uncomfortable performing this repair yourself, it's best to take your Corvette to a qualified mechanic experienced with classic cars. Damage to the chrome bezels can be costly to repair.
