The car company Mercedes-Benz was created in 1926 by the merger of two automotive companies: Benz & Cie. and Daimler-Motoren-Gesellschaft (DMG).
Karl Benz was the founder of Benz & Cie., a German automobile company founded in 1883, and is considered one of the pioneers of the automobile. He created the first internal combustion engine-powered car in 1885 and patented it in 1886.
Gottlieb Daimler and Wilhelm Maybach were the founders of DMG and created their first internal combustion engine-powered car in 1886, which was also patented in 1886.
The merger of Benz & Cie. and DMG in 1926 led to the formation of Mercedes-Benz. The name Mercedes was derived from the daughter of Emil Jellinek, a wealthy Austrian businessman who had a close relationship with DMG and helped popularize their cars, especially in France.
