How do you set my chevy 235 to top dead center?

Tools and Materials Needed:

- Spark plug wrench or socket

- Flathead screwdriver

- Piston stop

Step-by-Step Guide:

1. Remove the spark plugs: Use a spark plug wrench or socket to loosen and remove the spark plugs from the engine. It's important to do this to relieve any compression in the cylinders.

2. Turn off all accessories and close doors and windows.

3. Locate the timing tab on the engine: On the front of the engine, you should see a timing tab or pointer attached to the timing chain cover. This tab marks the position of the piston in the cylinder.

4. Insert the piston stop: Screw the piston stop into the spark plug hole for cylinder number 1 (the hole closest to the front of the engine). Turn the crankshaft pulley slowly using a wrench until the piston stop just touches the piston. This will prevent the piston from moving any further up in the cylinder.

5. Turn the crankshaft pulley: Continue to turn the crankshaft pulley slowly in the clockwise direction using a wrench.

6. Check the timing tab alignment: As you turn the pulley, observe the timing tab. When the tab is aligned with the "0" mark on the timing chain cover, the piston in cylinder number 1 is at top dead center (TDC).

7. Make any necessary adjustments: If the timing tab is not aligned with the "0" mark, you may need to adjust the engine's timing. This is typically done by loosening the distributor and rotating it until the timing tab aligns correctly. Tighten the distributor to secure it in place.

Once you have confirmed the the piston is at TDC, you can now proceed with the next step or task you intended to do. Always verify the location of TDC before adjusting any components like ignition timing and valve adjustment.
